Day 4 Thursday August 15

Lessons Learned

Identifying a societal issue, the causes, the potential solutions and what we as individuals can do

Learning to collaborate and work towards a common purpose with civility and commitment

What is a Social Change Movement and why do people become involved.

Today, we did an activity that was an exercise of controversy with civility. We were split into 2 groups and each group got their own mission that they had to do. This mission involved acquiring 2 endangered oranges to create a cure for an epidemic. One group represented America while the other represented China. Both groups took time to carefully examine our mission.
Then, we took part in an "auction" with fake money to get the 2 oranges that were auctioned. We each got one orange which forced us into negotiating for the other orange. We all sat down and immediately started bargaining for the oranges. After some time, we both acknowledged that we needed the inside of the oranges while china, the other group, need the peel. We came to an agreement that we would peel the oranges and exchange the peels and insides. This is an example of controversy with civility because both sides needed different things from the orange and we both acknowledged that fact that we weren't going for the same thing.

The presentation activity stood out the most to me.

I have improved with public speaking since the beginning of this week. I also learned a few things about my fellow classmates, such as one of them has other goals not Star Wars related, and another classmate plays multiple instruments.

My time this week has taught me a lot of valuable lessons about leadership that will help me succeed in life. I learned that the 7 c’s are easy applicable to the things we do every day. I learned about social change movements, and how people have shown leadership through these movements and fightingfor what they believe in, good or bad.
The negotiation activity helped me display leadership by discussing with the other group what we both wanted and coming up with a compromise. The letter activity helped me find out about organizations that are helping support these movements and what they can do to help make the world a better place.

The highlight of today was the presentation skills activity. I found it interesting to see what people were passionate about, who they wanted to be, and what they loved. I believe my presentation skills have improved throughout the week; I am more confident, I don't stutter as often, and I have learned how to elaborate on information.
